“没有辛劳，哪有收获”（No pains, No gains）！但有付出也不一定就能成功，“凡是规律都有例外”（No rule without exception）；故要“抱最好的希望，做最坏的打算”（Hope for the best and prepare for the worst）。这三条英语谚语给我留下难以磨灭的印象（They were given me lasting impression）。

我的英语发力是在1979年高考名落孙山之后，且从吉林人民广播电台的英语教学节目做起——我已“接班”并工作于中国土畜产进出口公司吉林省分公司的长春市郊大屯仓库。

该教学节目每天早上五点开始，用的是“北京市业余外语广播讲座”教材。从中级班起，每篇课文之后有两句英语谚语（Proverbs），印象最深的是本文开头的那三条。现将中级班1-3册所有英语谚语摘录如下。

Live and learn（活到老学到老）。Learn to walk before you run（先走后跑）。Where there is a will, there is a way（有志者，事竟成）。Practice make perfect（熟能生巧）。Strike while the iron is hot（趁热打铁）。Well begun, half done（良好开端，成功一半）。A stitch in time saves nine（一针及时省九针）。Easier said than done（说比做容易）。Facts speak louder than words（事实胜于雄辩）。A friend in need is a friend indeed（患难见真情）。Seeing is believing（眼见为实）。Pride goes before a fall（骄必败）。Discontent is the first step in progress（不满足是进步的开端）。Two heads are better than one（三个臭皮匠，顶个诸葛亮）。Call a spade a spade（一是一，二是二）。It is never too late to mend（亡羊补牢，犹未为晚）。Better late than never（迟做总比不做好）。

Birds of a feather flock together（物以类聚）。One swallow does not make a summer（独燕不是春）。Time and tide wait for no man（岁月不待人）。United we stand, divided we fall（团结则存，分裂则亡）。A little learning is a dangerous thing（一知半解是危险的事）。Grasp all, lose all（什么都抓，什么也抓不住）。Never judge by appearances（人不可貌相）。False friends are worse than open enemies（虚伪的朋友比公开的敌人还要坏）。Art is long, but life is short（学问无穷，人生有限）。True gold fears not the fire（真金不怕火炼）。From saving comes having（勤俭出财富）。Force can never destroy right（武力不能摧毁正义）。Honesty is the best policy（诚实是上策）。The leopard cannot change its spots（豹子的斑点是不变的）。It takes two to make a quarrel（一只碗不响，两只碗叮当）。One is never too old to learn（活到老学到老）。Many a little makes a mickle（积少成多）。Let bygones be bygones（既往不咎）。He laughs best who laughs last（谁笑到最后，谁笑得最好）。He who makes no mistakes makes nothing（怕犯错误的人什么也做不成）。As a man sows, so he shall reap（种瓜得瓜，种豆得豆）。A good medicine tastes bitter（良药苦口）。

Brevity is the soul of wit（言以简洁为贵）。A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush（双鸟在林不如一鸟在手）。There is no smoke without fire（无风不起浪）。The best mirror is an old friend（老朋友是最好的镜子）。After dinner sit a while, after supper walk a mile（午饭后要坐，晚饭后要走）。The pot calls the kettle black（五十步笑百步）。Empty vessels make the greatest noise（一瓶不响，半瓶叮当）。Waste not, want not（不浪费，不愁缺）。Unity is strength（团结就是力量）。Never say die（永不绝望）。Speak of the devil, and he is sure to come（说曹操，曹操就到）。Knowledge is power（知识就是力量）。No sweet without some sweat（不流汗就没有幸福）。Handsome is that handsome does（做得漂亮才是漂亮）。The best fish swim near the bottom（好鱼居水底）。
